Conversations with Young People DVD

What the video is about
This video takes you into the real lives of young people; unscripted, immediate and genuine, from more formally sitting in a counselling room, to the casualness of the street together with the sounds of the wind and passing traffic.
If you find yourself trying to help a young person sort out a problem, manage a feeling, or just work out their next step in life, this video is intended for you. You may be a counsellor, a youth worker, a sports coach or simply someone who finds yourself in the role of ‘the accidental counsellor’. The video offers you clear ideas on:
- what to ask questions about
- what questions to ask
- different ways of asking these questions. And importantly…
- what to do if you hear something that you find disturbing or worrying.
Here is a sample of the DVD
You will see more than 3 hours of 8 individual and 2 group conversations which are at different times exciting, risky, difficult, sensitive, and always optimistic and helpful.
A detailed menu system means you can view the video in different ways. The conversations are divided into the stages of ‘Beginning’, ‘Developing’, ‘Deepening’ and ‘Towards the end’, but you can click on ‘Individual stories’ and see each story from beginning to end. Experiment and see what works best for you.
Peter is interviewed in ‘Conversations’ by Margaret Condonis, therapist and trainer, as together they reflect on the conversations and some of the key ideas, processes and moments within them.

Read Chapter 1 of Youthworks
This book, which has now sold thousands of copies and is in use across the world, is full of practical ways to explore the questions about the sorts of lives young people wish to lead. Youthworks presents a way of ‘talking’ with young people that is both powerful and compelling. It combines the insight of therapeutic questioning with the intrigue of theatre; The joy of physical movement with the revealing openness of drawing; the power of humour with the depth of meaningful conversation. The approach is uniquely creative and accessible. This is an important book for anyone who works with young people either individually or in groups, in families or in couples.
‘Youthworks’ is full of creative and down-to-earth ways to explore with young people the questions and dilemmas that confront them in today’s world. Do I want to take drugs? Do I really want to have sex with this person? Do I want to leave home? Why am I so angry? What’s important to me? What do I want out of life? Why do I feel so awful? ‘Youthworks’ presents a way of ‘talking’ with young people that is both powerful and compelling. The following is an email I received about the book and I thought it was just great.
‘Hey peter,
Just a quick note to say i loved the book dude. it looks at age old problems in a slightly diff way and i love that. Really got me thinking. If youth work really is about engaging young people, there is a real lack of info about the nuts and bolts of the actual engagement. Your book is different to all my other texts and i love it. Its dog eared, highlighted, stained and being put to good use man, cheers.’
Russell, Youth Worker.
And I am delighted with these other comments:
‘An invaluable resource for anyone who works with young people’
Carmen, Clinical Psychologist.
‘Sometimes we all need to ask: Is this working? This book provides a realistic and creative base for change in the way we look at working with young people. Practical and realistic.’
Sally, Youth Worker.
‘This book presents a wonderfully direct and engaging use of theatre techniques in therapy and education.’
Paul, Lecturer in Performance Studies and Community Theatre.
‘This is not a text book but a guide for both young people and adults. It is honest and involving and I enjoyed reading it. It taught me alot about open communication between adults and young people.’
Anna, 18 years old.
‘There is much in this book that is helpful. It deepened my understanding of the processes involved in working with young people and it extended me in being helpful, spontaneous, respectful, and creative in my work.’
Tirrania, Community Worker.

QUESTIONS OF CHOICE
This hour long video (or DVD) is about group work with young people and shows real footage from groups run both in and out of schools. It has been described as ‘very interactive, creative and entertaining!’ And I have to say, that even though this vid was made a few years back and the hair styles and high-waisted pants are now a bit naff…there is just some terrific stuff here. It’s funny, and moving and really just timeless.
